Tara for Art, a programme to support and reward women artists worldwide.

In this context of inequality, the Tara for Art initiative promoted by the Tara For Women Foundation aims to help women artists worldwide to develop their careers in the sector by promoting, connecting and supporting female entrepreneurship.

Tara For Art seeks to improve the statistics of the last decades, which confirms that gender parity in the art world is a pending task. Only 10 of the 100 most internationally recognised artists are women and only one of them is in the top 50 of the world market, according to data from the Gärna Art Gallery. However, in Spain, they represent 70% of the students of Fine Arts.

Works created by women artists represent between 3 and 5 % of the permanent collections in the USA and Europe, while at auction their works are sold at a much lower price than those of their male colleagues. “These data perfectly reflect the situation of inequality in terms of visibility, remuneration and recognition of the work of women artists that we are still facing today”, explains Laura Garna, director of Gärna Art Gallery.

For her part, the marketing director of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Carolina Fábregas, assures that “in the society in which we find ourselves today, it is still important and necessary to create spaces where we give visibility to the work of women artists so that they can express themselves”.

Tara for Art, is a programme to support and reward women artists worldwide. In this context of inequality, the Tara for Art initiative promoted by the Tara For Women Foundation aims to help women artists worldwide to develop their careers in the sector by promoting, connecting and supporting female entrepreneurship. “Through this programme and the call for prizes, we aim to stimulate, exhibit, highlight and make visible works by women artists who, through their projects, create social impact. Accompanying them and creating real opportunities that allow them to be sustainable and be able to make a living from their talent, thus contributing to reversing the critical situation of gender parity in this sector”, explains Carlota Pérez, CEO of Tara for Women.

The selection criteria included the presentation of visual arts projects focused on impacting, changing and improving the world through art. This call was open to female artists of legal age with a project focused on social impact and sustainability.

The programme’s jury is made up of big names from the contemporary art world: Carolina Fábregas from the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Antonella Liguori (artistic advisor), the artist Carla Cascales, David Barro (curator), Noemí Oliva (cultural manager), the collector Natalia Cobo de Bulgheroni, Chema de Francisco (Director of the Estampa Fair) and Andrea Gara, head of art at Tara For Women.

After months of applications, in which more than 150 applications were received from artists from all over the world, the members of the jury shortlisted ten finalists who will exhibit their work at the Gärna Art Gallery in Madrid from 24 to 27 May. The three winning artists: Irene Trapote (Spain), for her project “Hacer Territorio, atando cabos” Mónica Egido (Spain) for her project “FOMO” and Enea Lebrun (Panama), for her project “Jenené” received a financial prize of 10,000 euros to carry out a project over the next six months, mentoring for the next six months to boost their professional career through international resources and opportunities for the future.

The Tara for Art programme focused on promoting the visibility of female artists and works has been made possible thanks to the support and collaboration of companies that are clearly committed to female artistic talent, such as So-Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort, which has contributed with a prize for the acquisition of sculptural work, as well as the preparation of the exhibition catalogue. The Gravity Wave collaborated with the elaboration of the trophies, made with recycled fishermen’s nets, Garna Art Gallery has contributed the space for the exhibition of the works of the finalists and Fintonic, a platform specialised in improving the financial well-being of people who will offer three financial training courses, thus collaborating in the business development of the artists.
